YAG capsulotomy
Can I drive after YAG laser capsulotomy? DVLA standards and practical advice

YAG laser capsulotomy is a very quick outpatient procedure, but a few hours of blurred vision and dilated pupils mean it isn't a treatment you should drive home from. Here's what UK patients need to know about driving safely and legally after YAG laser.
The short answer
Do not drive on the day of your YAG laser capsulotomy. Most patients can drive again the following day, once vision has settled and they meet the DVLA visual standard. Some patients with lingering floaters or blurring may need 24–48 hours before feeling safe behind the wheel.
Why you can't drive immediately
During YAG laser treatment:
- Your pupils are dilated with eye drops, which blurs near vision and increases glare
- Anaesthetic drops can cause mild stinging and watering
- Small floaters from the treated capsule are often visible for a few hours
- Vision is usually a little misty for the rest of the day
These effects are temporary but they mean you should not drive yourself home. Arrange a taxi, lift or public transport.
The DVLA visual standard
To drive a car in the UK, DVLA requires you to:
- Read a car number plate at 20 metres (with glasses or contacts if needed)
- Have visual acuity of at least 6/12 (Snellen) in the better eye
- Have an adequate visual field
After YAG laser most patients meet these standards within 24 hours. If in doubt, wait until your vision is clearly stable before driving.
When to wait longer
Delay driving if you have:
- Persistent blurring or floaters that interfere with focus
- Glare, especially at night, that makes headlights uncomfortable
- A raised intraocular pressure reaction to the treatment
- Any concern that your vision is not as sharp as before
Report any sudden loss of vision, flashes or a curtain of shadow to the clinic urgently.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I drive myself home after YAG laser capsulotomy?
- No. Your pupils will be dilated and your vision blurred for several hours, so you should not drive on the day of treatment. Arrange a taxi, lift or public transport.
- When can I drive again after YAG laser capsulotomy?
- Most patients can drive again the day after YAG laser capsulotomy, once vision has settled and they meet the DVLA number-plate standard at 20 metres. Some patients need 24–48 hours.
- Do I need to tell the DVLA about YAG laser capsulotomy?
- You do not need to notify DVLA specifically about YAG laser capsulotomy, but you must not drive if your vision does not meet the standard. If both eyes are affected by long-term visual problems you must inform DVLA.
- Is night driving harder after YAG laser?
- Some patients notice temporary glare or halos around lights for a day or two after YAG laser. This usually settles quickly. Avoid night driving until glare no longer interferes with focus.
