Being a 'Glaucoma Suspect'

What it means to be monitored as a glaucoma suspect — the risk factors, tests and follow-up involved.

You have been diagnosed as a 'glaucoma suspect'. This means you do not have glaucoma, but you have features that suggest you may be at risk of developing it.

Glaucoma is a condition in which the optic nerve — the nerve that carries visual signals from the eye to the brain — becomes damaged. This is usually caused by fluid building up inside the eye and raising the pressure, although some people develop glaucoma with normal pressure. There are often no early symptoms, but if left untreated glaucoma can cause severe, permanent vision loss.

The damage usually starts in the side (peripheral) vision. Because this happens gradually, you may not notice it at first. Early diagnosis and treatment can usually prevent significant sight loss.
