What your lens replacement assessment needs to establish

Refractive lens exchange removes your natural lens permanently. It is different from an implantable contact lens (ICL), which is added without removing the natural lens. The right choice depends on your remaining natural focusing ability, prescription and eye health; age alone does not decide suitability.

Measurements and medical history

Bring current glasses, a recent prescription, medication details and any previous laser or eye-operation reports. Measurements help select the implant power; examining the cornea, retina and optic nerve helps identify conditions that may limit vision or change lens choice. Ask whether dry eye or another condition needs attention before final measurements.

A visual target you can live with

Describe your reading distance, screen use and night driving. Monofocal, EDOF and multifocal lenses involve different compromises in range of focus and visual quality. Glasses may still be needed. An implant is not a guarantee of perfect vision at every distance, and the decision should include alternatives to surgery.

Risks and later treatment

Discuss infection, inflammation, retinal detachment and the possibility of additional treatment as individual risks, not just generic statistics. The artificial lens does not develop a cataract, but the capsule behind it can become cloudy later (posterior capsule opacification); some patients need YAG laser for this. New flashes, a curtain or shadow, sudden vision loss or increasing pain need urgent eye assessment.
