Can skin tags near the eye be removed safely?

Yes. Skin tags close to the lashes or lid margin should be removed by an eye surgeon rather than in a beauty setting, because the lid margin, tear ducts and cornea all have to be protected. It is a short procedure under local anaesthetic.

Will there be a scar?

Eyelid skin heals unusually well. Incisions are placed in natural skin creases or along the lid margin where possible, and most scars become difficult to see within a few months.

How do I know whether an eyelid lump is serious?

Warning signs include slow growth, bleeding, ulceration, loss of lashes and recurrence in the same spot. These features need an examination, and often a biopsy, rather than reassurance over the phone.

Is xanthelasma removal covered by insurance?

Xanthelasma is usually treated as cosmetic and therefore self-pay, whereas a lesion that is suspicious or functionally troublesome is often covered. Your policy is checked and quoted before anything is booked.

How soon can lid lesion removal be arranged?

Assessment is usually available within days, and minor lid procedures are commonly done at a following appointment — sooner if a lesion is suspicious.

Eyelid Lesion and Skin Tag Removal in the UK

Eyelid skin is the thinnest on the body and sits millimetres from the eye, so lid lumps are best removed by someone who operates on eyes. Most are entirely benign — skin tags, cysts of Moll or Zeis, papillomas, xanthelasma — but a small number are skin cancers that look harmless, which is why assessment comes before removal.

You go home the same day. The lid is swollen and bruised for a few days and then settles fast.

Antibiotic ointment for around one week
Any sutures removed or dissolved at five to seven days
Bruising fades over one to two weeks
Back to desk work the next day; gym and swimming after two weeks
Scars on eyelid skin usually heal very discreetly

When to seek urgent care

• A lid lesion that bleeds, crusts repeatedly or is slowly enlarging
• Loss of lashes over a lump, or a notch appearing in the lid margin
• Any previously treated lesion that grows back in the same place
