How a stye or chalazion is treated
Treatment depends on how old the lump is and what it is doing to your eye. The consultation always starts with an examination at the slit lamp so the diagnosis is certain before anything is done.
- Conservative care: heat, lid massage and lid hygiene done properly, with a technique demonstration
- Antibiotics where there is genuine infection rather than a blocked gland
- Incision and curettage: the cyst is opened from inside the lid and emptied under local anaesthetic
- Intralesional steroid injection for small or awkwardly placed chalazia
- Excision biopsy with histology if the lesion looks anything other than routine
Recovery after eyelid cyst treatment
Most people go back to normal life the same day. The lid is bruised and swollen for a few days, then settles quickly.
