Decoding eye surgery adverts: what '£995 per eye' really means

Private eye surgery is a competitive market, and its advertising follows recognisable patterns. None of this is necessarily dishonest — but almost all of it means something narrower than it first appears.

'From £995 per eye'

'From' is doing all the work. That price typically covers the lowest prescriptions with the most basic treatment on the oldest platform, and excludes premium lenses, astigmatism correction and enhancements. Ask for your price, in writing, after your scans.

'Lifetime guarantee' / 'lifetime commitment'

Read the exclusions. These schemes usually cover re-treatment of the original correction within defined limits, and exclude changes caused by presbyopia, cataract or any new eye disease — which is to say, most of the reasons people need glasses again later.

'Over 100,000 procedures performed'

That is a company figure, not your surgeon's. Ask how many your surgeon personally performs each year.

'The latest laser / the newest lens'

New is not the same as better. Ask what evidence supports it over the established alternative for your prescription and scans.

'20/20 vision or your money back'

20/20 is a distance letter-chart measure. It says nothing about reading vision, contrast, night glare or comfort — the things patients actually judge their result by.

'Award-winning clinic'

Check who awarded it and on what basis. Independently verified patient review platforms and GMC specialist registration mean considerably more than a trade award.

'Free consultation'

Often a screening appointment with an optometrist or advisor, not a full consultant diagnostic assessment. Ask who you will see, what scans are included and whether a consultant reviews the results with you.

'Book today for £500 off'

Time-limited discounts on elective surgery are a sales technique. Your eyes will still be there next week, and so should the price.

What a trustworthy offer looks like

A named consultant with a GMC number you can check, a full diagnostic workup before any price is quoted, a fixed written total with the enhancement policy stated, honest discussion of trade-offs, and a clear willingness to tell you that you are not suitable. Our pricing and surgeon credentials are published for precisely that reason.

Where to go from here

If any of this sounds like your own experience, the sensible next step is a full diagnostic assessment with a consultant — not a sales appointment. Ms Tahmina Pearsall is a UK-trained NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with more than 40,000 procedures behind her, and she personally performs every operation she plans. You can see current fixed prices, read verified patient reviews or book a consultation at any of the UK clinic locations.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my quote higher than the advertised price?
Advertised 'from' prices generally apply to the simplest cases. Higher prescriptions, astigmatism correction and premium lenses all cost more, which is why a personalised written quote after scans is the only meaningful figure.
Are lifetime guarantees worth anything?
They can be, but check the exclusions. Most do not cover glasses needed later because of presbyopia or cataract.
Should I be worried about a discount that expires today?
Treat it as a sales signal. Reputable consultant-led practices give you time and a fixed price that does not evaporate.
