YAG capsulotomy
How long does YAG laser capsulotomy last? Is the result permanent?

YAG laser capsulotomy is a one-off treatment for most patients. Once the clouded capsule behind your lens implant has been opened, that opening is permanent. But long-term vision after YAG laser depends on more than just the capsule.
The short answer
YAG laser capsulotomy results are permanent. The opening made in the capsule does not close and posterior capsule opacification (PCO) cannot come back. Long-term vision changes after YAG laser are usually due to other, unrelated eye conditions rather than the laser itself.
Why the result is permanent
During YAG laser, focused pulses of laser create a small clear opening directly behind your lens implant. The capsule tissue at the edges of that opening cannot regrow across it, so light passes through cleanly for life. This is why YAG laser is described as a definitive treatment for PCO.
What can still change your vision later
Because the eye continues to age, other conditions may develop over time, including:
- **Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)** — affects central detail vision
- **Glaucoma** — a gradual loss of peripheral vision
- **Diabetic retinopathy** — in patients with diabetes
- **Dry eye** — increasingly common with age
None of these are caused by YAG laser, but any of them can reduce vision after an initially perfect YAG result.
Long-term follow-up
Even after successful YAG laser, it is important to:
- Have routine sight tests every 1–2 years
- Attend any diabetic or glaucoma monitoring appointments
- Report new floaters, flashes or shadows urgently
- Keep private records of your lens implant details

Frequently asked questions
- Is YAG laser capsulotomy a permanent treatment?
- Yes. The opening made in the capsule behind your lens implant is permanent. Posterior capsule opacification cannot come back once treated.
- Can I need YAG laser twice in the same eye?
- It is very unusual. In rare cases the initial opening is small and needs enlarging, but a true repeat YAG is uncommon.
- Will my vision stay sharp forever after YAG laser?
- YAG laser gives a permanent fix for PCO, but other age-related eye conditions such as macular degeneration or glaucoma can still develop. Routine eye tests remain important.
- Does the lens implant last a lifetime?
- Yes. Modern intraocular lens implants are designed to last the rest of your life without needing to be replaced.
