The true lifetime cost of glasses and contact lenses vs surgery in the UK

Almost every patient who sits in my clinic has weighed the cost of surgery against 'doing nothing'. Very few have costed 'doing nothing' properly. It is not free — it is simply paid in small instalments over decades, which makes it invisible.

What glasses actually cost over twenty years

A typical UK varifocal wearer replaces their main pair every two years. Mid-range varifocals with anti-reflective and thinner lenses commonly run to £300–£600 a pair, and prescription sunglasses add more. Over twenty years that is frequently £4,000–£8,000, before you count the pairs that are sat on, lost or scratched.

What contact lenses actually cost

Monthly disposables with solutions typically cost £20–£35 a month in the UK, plus a back-up pair of glasses and an annual contact lens check. At £25 a month, twenty years is £6,000 — and most contact lens wearers still own glasses as well.

What surgery costs

Fees vary by procedure and lens type. Our own current fixed prices start from around £2,000 per eye for laser vision correction and from around £2,750 per eye for lens replacement or cataract surgery, with the price fixed in writing before the day. Unlike glasses, it is a one-off cost, and lens implants do not wear out, cloud over or need replacing.

The honest comparison

For a 50-year-old varifocal wearer, twenty years of spectacles plus prescription sunglasses is usually within the same order of magnitude as a bilateral lens replacement — with the difference that surgery also removes any future cataract, which the great majority of people would otherwise need treating in later life anyway.

Costs that never show up on a receipt

Time lost to appointments and repairs. Sport given up. Not driving at night. Steamed-up lenses in winter. Swimming while effectively blind. These are the costs patients mention most in follow-up — and the ones that vanish first.

The traps to avoid

Be wary of headline 'from' prices. A genuine quote should state the surgeon's fee, hospital fee, lens type, all follow-up visits, the cost of any enhancement, and what happens if you need a second procedure. Ask for the total in writing before you commit — an honest clinic will hand it over without being asked twice.

Finance is not the same as affordability

Interest-free finance is widely available in UK private eye care and is genuinely useful, but a monthly figure is not a price. Always compare the total payable, not the instalment.

Where to go from here

If any of this sounds like your own experience, the sensible next step is a full diagnostic assessment with a consultant — not a sales appointment. Ms Tahmina Pearsall is a UK-trained NHS Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with more than 40,000 procedures behind her, and she personally performs every operation she plans. You can see current fixed prices, read verified patient reviews or book a consultation at any of the UK clinic locations.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser eye surgery or lens replacement cheaper in the UK?
Laser vision correction usually has a lower headline price, but it does not treat presbyopia permanently or prevent cataract. For patients over about 50, lens replacement often represents better long-term value because it deals with both.
Can I claim eye surgery on private medical insurance?
Cataract surgery is often covered where there is a clinical indication; purely refractive procedures generally are not. We can provide the coding and documentation your insurer needs.
Are there hidden extras?
There should not be. Ask specifically about follow-up appointments, eye drops, laser enhancement and YAG capsulotomy, and get the answer in writing.
