NHS cataract waiting times and the private alternative, explained

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed operation in the NHS, and waits vary widely between regions. Waiting is not a cost-free choice — reduced night driving, higher falls risk and loss of confidence accumulate month by month.

What NHS patient choice allows

Patients in England can usually ask to be referred to a provider with a shorter wait. It is worth asking your GP directly.

When cataracts are treated on the NHS

Thresholds are based on visual acuity and the effect on daily life. Some patients whose vision troubles them do not yet meet local thresholds.

What going private actually buys

A named consultant who performs your surgery and sees you afterwards, appointments in weeks rather than months, and access to premium lens options that reduce or remove the need for glasses. Costs are fixed and quoted in advance.

How to compare fairly

Ask who operates, how many procedures they perform each year, what the price includes, what happens if a second procedure is needed, and whether aftercare is with the same surgeon.

A reasonable middle path

Get assessed, get the facts about your own eyes, then decide. An assessment does not commit you to surgery.

What this means if you are considering surgery in the UK

New technology only helps when it is matched to the right eye. Ms Tahmina Pearsall FRCOphth is a UK consultant ophthalmic surgeon on the GMC specialist register with more than 40,000 eye procedures performed, and she assesses every patient personally before recommending anything. If private cataract surgery is relevant to you, a consultation will tell you whether it changes your options — or whether a simpler, better-established treatment gives you a safer result.
