Robotic assistance in eye surgery: what is real in 2026

Robotic assistance in ophthalmology is not an autonomous machine operating alone. It is a surgeon-controlled system that filters hand tremor and scales movement down to microns.

Where it is genuinely used

Sub-retinal injection, membrane peeling and other procedures that demand steadiness beyond human limits at the back of the eye.

Why not cataract surgery

Modern cataract surgery already takes ten to fifteen minutes in experienced hands, with excellent outcomes. Adding a robot adds cost and time without an outcome benefit.

What to make of the marketing

If a clinic advertises 'robotic cataract surgery', ask precisely which step the machine performs. Usually the answer is the laser steps, which is a different technology altogether.

What this means if you are considering surgery in the UK

New technology only helps when it is matched to the right eye. Ms Tahmina Pearsall FRCOphth is a UK consultant ophthalmic surgeon on the GMC specialist register with more than 40,000 eye procedures performed, and she assesses every patient personally before recommending anything. If the technology used in your surgery is relevant to you, a consultation will tell you whether it changes your options — or whether a simpler, better-established treatment gives you a safer result.
