Gene therapy for inherited retinal disease: a progress report

A single injection under the retina, delivering a working copy of a faulty gene, is now licensed treatment for certain inherited retinal dystrophies. It is one of the most significant developments in modern ophthalmology.

Which conditions are involved

Treatment so far targets specific single-gene conditions confirmed by genetic testing. Diagnosis therefore begins with a genetic panel, not with a scan alone.

What results look like

Improvements are usually in light sensitivity and navigation in dim conditions rather than a return to normal sight. Treating earlier, before photoreceptors are lost, matters enormously.

What it does not treat

Gene therapy is not a treatment for cataract, age-related macular degeneration in general, glaucoma or long-sightedness. Claims otherwise should be treated with scepticism.

Why this still matters to ordinary patients

The same research culture that produced retinal gene therapy has driven better imaging, better surgical technique and better lens design — advances that reach far more patients every week.

What this means if you are considering surgery in the UK

New technology only helps when it is matched to the right eye. Ms Tahmina Pearsall FRCOphth is a UK consultant ophthalmic surgeon on the GMC specialist register with more than 40,000 eye procedures performed, and she assesses every patient personally before recommending anything. If advances in retinal medicine is relevant to you, a consultation will tell you whether it changes your options — or whether a simpler, better-established treatment gives you a safer result.
