Presbyopia eye drops: what they can and cannot do

Presbyopia — the gradual loss of close focus from the mid-forties — affects everyone eventually. Drops that constrict the pupil create a pinhole effect that deepens the focus range for several hours.

How well they work

Many users gain one or two lines of near vision for around six hours. The effect fades, and doses are repeated daily.

The drawbacks

Dim vision in low light, brow ache in the first weeks, and reduced usefulness in people who already have a cataract forming. They also do nothing for distance vision.

Drops versus lens replacement

Drops are a daily management tool. Refractive lens exchange with a modern extended-depth-of-focus or trifocal implant is a one-off procedure that also removes any future cataract. Which is right depends on age, prescription, eye health and how much you want to stop thinking about it.

A sensible way to decide

Try the conservative option, note honestly how often you still reach for glasses, then get a full assessment before committing to surgery.
