Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery: a gentler option

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually in association with raised pressure inside the eye. Traditional filtering surgery is effective but involves a longer recovery and more follow-up.

What MIGS procedures do

Devices smaller than a grain of rice improve the eye's natural drainage through very small incisions, lowering pressure with less tissue disruption.

The cataract combination

Many patients have their glaucoma stent placed during cataract surgery. One operation, one recovery, two problems addressed.

Who it suits

Mild to moderate glaucoma, particularly patients struggling with daily drops. Advanced disease often still needs traditional surgery.

The part people forget

Glaucoma is usually symptomless until late. Regular pressure and optic nerve checks are the only reliable way to catch it early.

What this means if you are considering surgery in the UK

New technology only helps when it is matched to the right eye. Ms Tahmina Pearsall FRCOphth is a UK consultant ophthalmic surgeon on the GMC specialist register with more than 40,000 eye procedures performed, and she assesses every patient personally before recommending anything. If glaucoma and cataract treatment is relevant to you, a consultation will tell you whether it changes your options — or whether a simpler, better-established treatment gives you a safer result.
