Home vision monitoring tools move into routine eye care

Monitoring vision at home is not new — the Amsler grid is decades old — but tablet-based tests now record results over time and alert a clinic when they change.
Where home monitoring works
Macular disease under treatment, where detecting a change quickly can bring an injection forward and preserve central vision.
Where it misleads
A home test cannot measure eye pressure, examine the optic nerve, or find a peripheral retinal tear. A normal home result is not a clean bill of health.
A practical rule
Sudden distortion, a new dark patch, a shower of floaters or a curtain across your vision means same-day assessment, not another app test.
What this means if you are considering surgery in the UK
New technology only helps when it is matched to the right eye. Ms Tahmina Pearsall FRCOphth is a UK consultant ophthalmic surgeon on the GMC specialist register with more than 40,000 eye procedures performed, and she assesses every patient personally before recommending anything. If regular specialist eye checks is relevant to you, a consultation will tell you whether it changes your options — or whether a simpler, better-established treatment gives you a safer result.
