It is rarely seen before age 50 and its incidence increases with age. It is more common in women and has a high prevalence in Scandinavian countries, where it is estimated to account for up to half of open-angle glaucoma. It is relatively rare in African Americans and Eskimos but is seen across Europe, the Middle East, South Africa and South America.
