Question 1

What will happen during the test?

Accepted Answer

Visual fields can be checked using several methods, and we will choose the one most suitable for your suspected or diagnosed condition. If you wear reading glasses, please bring them with you to your appointment.

Question 2

What is the Humphrey visual field test?

Accepted Answer

The most common field test for glaucoma uses a computer called the Humphrey visual field analyser, which projects a series of lights that flash on and off one at a time to find the dimmest light you can see. You sit with your forehead and chin against the rests and keep looking at the central orange dot throughout the test, pressing a buzzer whenever you notice a spot of light. The lights appear randomly at different angles, sizes and brightness, and the other eye is then tested. Some lights are bright and some very dim, so periods without seeing any lights are normal. Blink normally (best just after pressing the button), let the technician know if you cannot see the lights or they are out of focus, and alert them if you need help. The test is not designed to assess whether your vision is good enough to drive.

Question 3

What is the Goldmann visual field test?

Accepted Answer

In some cases you may be asked to perform a Goldmann visual field assessment. This test is not computer-controlled — instead of flashes of light, you will be shown a moving target of different sizes.

Question 4

How long do the tests take?

Accepted Answer

The Humphrey visual field test takes about 5 to 10 minutes per eye, while the Goldmann test can take up to 30 minutes per eye. Sitting comfortably and concentrating on the instructions improves accuracy and reliability — please tell the examiner if you are uncomfortable or finding the test difficult.

Question 5

What happens after the test?

Accepted Answer

The results are available immediately and we will explain them to you at your appointment.

Question 6

Will I need to have the test repeated?

Accepted Answer

This depends on your results. If the test shows a condition that needs monitoring, you may be asked to have a visual field assessment at your next appointment. Repeat tests improve reliability and help track any changes to your vision over time. Visual fields are regularly monitored in clinics such as glaucoma and neurology.
