Glaucoma damages the optic nerve slowly and usually without symptoms until late, so most decisions are based on measurements rather than how your eyes feel. That is exactly why a second opinion can be valuable.

Good reasons to ask

You have been told you are a 'glaucoma suspect' and are unsure whether you need treatment. You use several drops and are still told your pressure is too high. Drops cause redness, stinging or other side effects you struggle with. You have been offered laser (SLT) or surgery and want to understand why. Or you have cataract as well and want to know whether combined cataract and glaucoma care is an option.

What the review checks

Eye pressure, corneal thickness, the drainage angle, a detailed optic nerve examination and OCT scan, and your visual field tests — ideally compared with your previous results to see whether anything is changing. Ms Pearsall also reviews which drops you use and how, because technique and side effects often explain poor control.

What you come away with

A clear explanation of whether glaucoma is present, how advanced it is, whether it appears stable, and what the realistic options are. Read more in our glaucoma guide and on being a glaucoma suspect.

Sudden severe eye pain with redness, blurred vision, haloes, headache or vomiting can be acute angle-closure glaucoma — an emergency. Go to eye casualty or A&E immediately.

This article is general information written for patients and does not replace an individual examination. A second opinion is an independent clinical assessment; it is not a legal review and does not by itself decide whether care elsewhere was right or wrong.
